Money Follows the Person

As of September 1, 2008, Independence Unlimited became a proud partner in the Money Follows the Person Program (MFP). Based on the National Real Choice Initiative of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) this statewide program is designed to maximize consumer choice and independence and to increase the use of home and community based services in lieu of the more costly institutional care.

Why home and community based care?

  • The 7th Oldest State in the Nation We climb to 3rd in the nation in the number of folks 85+
  • One Million Baby Boomers:Nearly One-Third of Connecticut’s Total Population 600,000 People Age 60 or Older
  • The Number of People 85 and Older Will Increase Threefold by 2040
  • By 2030: The number of people needing Long Term Care will increase 61% for people 85+; 51% for those 75 to 84; and 53% for people 60 to 74!

Independence Unlimited (IU) is a non-residential, non-profit center for in dependent living that serves a diverse population in 38 cities and towns mainly in Hartford County. Established in 1982, IU is governed and managed primarily by people with disabilities.

Major funding for Independence Unlimited is provided by the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, Administration on Community Living, CT Department of Rehabilitation Services, private grants, fee for service and individual donations.
